- The American Wirehair. This kitty is a low-energy, hanging-out kind of breed. They are independent, relaxed, and require almost no grooming. They are very quiet and sweet, making them good with children.
- The American Shorthair. Busy people, you’re in luck here; this cat is a minimal shedder and only requires grooming about once a month. They are quiet and low-energy with a calm temperament that makes them do well in homes with cat-friendly dogs.

- The Burmese. Though they love to vocalize, these cats have a soft, sweet voice to let you know what they’re thinking. They love being close to their owners and cuddle time is important. They’re frisky and mischievous and are good with children.

If you suffer from allergies, you might consider getting a cat that is hypoallergenic, or low-allergy. Some of the following cats have less dander than most, while others produce less of a certain protein found in a cat’s saliva that can cause allergies in some people.
- The Russian Blue. This gorgeous, silvery-blue cat is elegant, yet strong, and produces less of the protein that can cause allergies. They are excellent companions and they get along with everyone.
- The Sphynx. Though they appear to be hairless, they do have a downy-like covering that can be felt (but rarely seen) and does not trap allergens. They are playful, highly acrobatic, and will demand you attention. They do well with other cats and dogs.
- The Siberian. A long-haired and large sized cat (usually between 17 and 26 lbs.), this one produces less protein in its saliva and is therefore considered a great hypoallergenic choice. They are intelligent and affectionate and they are quite agile for their size.
